The Buddy Walk was developed by the National Down Syndrome Society
(NDSS) in 1995 to bring together a wide range of concerned individuals to reach out to friends, family, and co-workers
to promote awareness and inclusion for people with Down syndrome and to raise money for research, education, and
advocacy programs.
The Buddy Walk is a one-mile walk in which anyone can participate without special training. The walk has grown
from 17 walks in 1995 to more than 200 in recent years.

What: A major multi-site walking event
Why: To raise funds to support local and national programs and to advocate for people with Down syndrome. In 2005,
more than $5 million was raised through the NDSS Buddy Walks for local and national education, research, and advocacy
programs.
How: Through corporate sponsorships, participant registrations, and pledges collected by walkers.
Audience: More than 200,000 participants nationally and abroad including children, young adults and adults with
Down syndrome, family members, friends, healthcare professionals, corporate teams and members of the community.

Angels Forever Up! represents a group of parents and professionals in Southern Maryland who share a vision for
persons with Down syndrome. An affiliate group of the NDSS, Angels Forever Up! is a nonprofit organization dedicated
to promoting awareness and inclusion for all persons with Down syndrome. |

What is the Buddy Walk?
The Buddy Walk is a multi-city advocacy walk in which people with Down syndrome invite “buddies” to walk with them.
The goal of the BUDDY WALK is to celebrate National Down Syndrome Awareness Month in October, and promote acceptance
and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. Nationally, the BUDDY WALK raises more than $8.5 million.
Funds are raised through corporate sponsorship and walkers’ pledges in our local walk and walks around the country.
